What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is pain that occurs in the lower back, hips, buttocks, and leg that is caused when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched or damaged. When the nerve becomes pinched, the pain can occur anywhere along the nerve's path and often felt on one side through the entire length of the nerve. Sciatica pain can be mild or severe and sometimes feeling like an electrical shock traveling down the leg. In many cases, sciatica will resolve on its own, however, if it is not treated, it can cause permanent nerve damage and chronic pain.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica is not a condition, but is rather a symptom of sciatic nerve pain and damage. Symptoms associated with sciatica may include mild tingling, dull ache, or burning sensation that begins in the lower back or buttocks and runs through the hip and down the leg. In addition, some patients experience numbness or weakness and claim their foot gets caught when walking due to sciatica. Typically, symptoms occur on one side of the body, but in rare cases, symptoms can appear on both sides.
